ALAWYER representing Rochdale grooming victims is among Labour's Heywood and Middleton by-election hopefuls - but UKIP say the party could get a 'shock' next month.

Richard Scorer, of Slater and Gordon solicitors, has acted on behalf of abuse victims from a wave of cases across the borough.

He is one of a string of Labour hopefuls eyeing up the Heywood and Mid-dleton constituency after a snap by-election was confirmed for October 9. Labour will be looking to hold on to the seat, which they hold with a 6,000 majority - but UKIP has told the M.E.N. they are in with a chance.

The by-election was triggered by the death of Labour MP Jim Dobbin on Sunday during a parliamentary visit to Poland. No date has yet been announced for his funeral.

Labour rushed through the parliamentary paperwork for the poll this week ahead of MPs rising for conference season - in a bid to get the same date as the Clacton by-election.

After some wrangling with Rochdale council, that date has now been set. …
