Pop Star Rick Reunited with Record Producer at 80s Party ; Chart Star and the Man Who Spotted His Talent among Guests at Cancer Charity Ball.

POP impresario Pete Waterman was reunited with 1980s chart star Rick Astley almost 30 years after discovering him in a working men's club.

Record producer and song writer Pete talentspotted Rick, now 48, whose 1987 hit Never Gonna Give You Up topped the charts in 25 countries.

Rick, from Newton-le-Willows, had eight consecutive top 10 hits before walking away from the spotlight at the height of his fame.

Pete, who together with colleagues at hit factory Stock Aitken Waterman, provided the soundtrack to much of the 1980s, said Rick nearly missed his chance to show off his amazing voice back in 1985.

Pete said: "I had to be persuaded to go the club to see some act or other. But I'm so pleased I did.

"Rick was supposed to be playing drums that night but the singer was ill so he stepped in. The rest as they say, is history."

Pete and Rick were special guests at the glitzy Fly Back To The 80s ball, held at Manchester Airport's Runway Visitor Centre on Saturday night. …
