SPITEFUL thieves flooded a pensioner's flat because they couldn't get his television out through a window.

John Fleming's family have now issued a warning to other residents in his closeknit community as police investigate the break- in.

Burglars struck as retired bricklayer John, 86, was asleep in bed in his small council flat in Heywood.

They attempted to lift his flat-screen 42-inch television out through a kitchen window but it wouldn't fit.

His family believe that in a fit of rage, the thieves turned on the taps in the sink and put the plug in.

Great-grandfather John, who lives alone on Civic Walk after the death of his wife five years ago, didn't hear a thing but woke to find his carpets sodden and under water.

The father-of-three said: "There was water all over the place. It has just made me upset really."

John's daughter Joanne Duncan, 48, blasted the heartless thieves and urged his elderly neighbours to take steps to prevent criminals breaking into their homes. …
