MP Blasts 'Incompetent' GMP Chief as He Pulls out of Debate ; Graham Stringer Lays into Sir Peter Fahy over His Withdrawal from Oxford Union Clash on Policing

N MP has launched a blistering attack on Greater Manchester's Achief constable after he pulled out of a high-profile head-to-head debate.

Graham Stringer, MP for Blackley and Broughton, has accused Sir Peter Fahy of 'failing to defend his incompetence'.

The prestigious Oxford Union debate, due to take place on February 23, was to discuss whether there was now no confidence in public policing.

Mr Stringer, a long-term critic of Sir Peter, will speak in support of that motion, while the chief constable was due to argue against it. But Sir Peter has now pulled out of the event, citing diary commitments because the date had been moved.

A furious Mr Stringer said: "He has always failed to defend his incompetence, whether it was the 2011 riots or the girls who were raped or abused in Rochdale.

"I'm very disappointed he's not turning up to basically debate his failure as a chief constable."

Oxford University's union debates have been running since 1823 and have provided a rich training ground for a dozen British prime ministers. …
