Runners Fast off the Blocks to Stop Thief ; Friends Hailed Heroes after Giving Chase to Knifeman Who Stole Woman's Handbag

aGROUP of runners on their way to dinner in Manchester city centre have been hailed heroes after foiling a knife-point robbery.

The friends saw a young woman have her bag snatched by a man. One of the group gave chase while the others comforted the victim, at the same time calling police. Their descriptions of the robber meant officers spotted him as he ran through the city centre.

Police gave chase and detained him just 15 minutes later.

The group of four - Matthew Riley, 31, his partner Christopher Paknik, 32, and their friends James Holden and Simone Keegan - have now been hailed heroes by police following the incident on Tuesday night. Matthew, a nurse, said: "There was a lady and a young man near John Rylands Library on Deansgate. At first it looked as if they were having a domestic but then she said 'he's taken my bag'.

"James gave chase but then heard he had a knife and turned back.

"I stayed with the lady and phoned police and they caught the suspect about 15 minutes later. …
