Plans to Mark Anniversary at College Really Taking off ; School Designed in Shape of Famous Lancaster Bomber Plane Which Was Built Nearby

ASCHOOL inspired by the famous Lancaster Bomber is on a mission to mark its diamond jubilee in style.

Celebrations at Hathershaw College include 60 sta members taking part in the Morrisons Great Manchester Run on Sunday, May 10.

EUR e Lancaster was built by Avro in nearby Chadderton and the school was designed in the plane's shape in recognition of its significant role in the Second World War.

EUR e anniversary of Hathershaw's opening in 1955 comes five days after teachers, assistants and admin sta join up to 40,000 other runners in Europe's biggest 10k run.

EUR eir team, which includes ex-employees, is led by Chair of Governors Coun Atteeque Ur-Reham who becomes Mayor of Oldham that week with funds raised by runners donated to his charities.

EUR ey will wear shirts designed by the winner of a competition among pupils.

Technology teacher Suzie Wiswell, herself a keen runner, had the idea of 60 runners to mark the school's age. Suzie said: "I've done the run several times and it creates an amazing atmosphere with the whole of Manchester getting behind the event. …
