SHAUN Wane described last night as by far 'the worst day of my coaching career' after Wigan suffered their heaviest defeat against Castleford in the Super League era The Tigers went into the match as one of two sides yet to register a competition point but picked up their first win at the fourth attempt to leave Salford rock bottom - and Wane fuming.

Justin Carney, a try-scorer in each of the first three rounds, crossed twice in the opening 15 minutes either side of James Clare's spectacular finish and Wigan never recovered, despite a Josh Charnley brace and Matty Smith effort.

"It was just not good enough, at all," said Wane.

"They wanted it more than us. I've never coached a team that have been beaten in every department like that.

"We were beaten by the better team - they wanted it more, ran harder and beat us in every department, which is very upsetting for me, devastating for me. …
