Councillor Says His Son 'Went on Holiday and Got Too Close to Border'

THE father of Waheed Ahmed has spoken of his shock and 'extreme upset' at his son's arrest at the Syrian border.

Rochdale councillor Shakil Ahmed said he had no idea his 21-year- old son, who studies politics and sociology at Manchester University, was even in Turkey.

He said he had believed he was on a work placement in Birmingham, but now thinks he may have gone on holiday to Turkey and 'got too close to the border'.

Labour councillor Mr Ahmed, who lives in Kings Road, Rochdale, issued a statement vowing he would have reported his son to the authorities if he had the slightest suspicion he was being radicalised.

He said: "I was shocked, worried and extremely upset to hear that my son has been arrested on the border. It's a total mystery to me why he's there, as I was under the impression he was on a work placement in Birmingham.

"My son is a good Muslim and his loyalties belong to Britain, so I don't understand what he's doing there.

"If I thought for a second that he was in danger of being radicalised, I would have reported him to the authorities. …
