SCHOOL pupils were taught a recipe for success from an award- winning restaurateur.

Top chef Steve Pilling, who owns a string of restaurants in Manchester, invited seven of the best students from Oasis Academy MEDIACITYUK, in Salford Quays, to his Damson restaurant, which lies on the former docklands.

As well as treating them to lunch as a reward their efforts in the classroom, Mr Pilling talked to the young achievers about his own humble background and his road to success.

Mr Pilling said: "I was born in a terraced house in Droylsden with an outside loo and a tin bath in front of the fire. I wasn't very bright at school, if I had my time over again I might work harder in terms of the academic side of things, but no-one's happier than I am now."

Mr Pilling, who once worked 90-hour weeks, advised students to work hard, speak to other people, ask for help and persevere. …
