SUPER 6 ANALYSIS: Hartselle 13, Vigor 3

Article excerpt

FIRST QUARTER

- Hartselle is winning the field position battle, thanks in large part to a mental miscue on a punt return, putting Vigor on their own 1-yard line.

- Give the Vigor defense credit. Despite a bone-headed offsides call on fourth-and-one that gave Hartselle first-and-goal from the 4- yard line. But the defense was able to force a fumble on second down, not giving up any points. Huge win.

- Hartselle brought a lot of folks to this game. A very good turnout for a Thursday night game.

- The Vigor offense hasn't shown much, mostly due to poor starting field position.

At the end of the first, there's no score. Chalk this up to a winning quarter for Vigor. Considering the mistakes made, they're lucky to walk away without giving up a touchdown.

We'll be back with more observations and analysis at the half.

SECOND QUARTER

- Vigor unable to keep a drive going. They make a few big plays, move the ball, and then stall out. They're going to have to string some first downs together and get on the board.

- Deacon Aldridge looking very comfortable at Bryant-Denny. (Could it be the copycat UA uniform?) He's making the right read on the option keeper and delivering the ball to his receivers where they can run after the catch.

- As I start bragging on Aldridge, he starts limping off the field after a third-down play falls incomplete. Looks like a knee or ankle injury. Doctor came and checked on him, walking away almost immediately. Doesn't look serious but something to pay attention to. ... A roughing the kicker penalty put the Hartselle offense back on the field and Alrdridge immediately throws an interception. Have to wonder if he was wary of running the ball.

- A three-and-out by Vigor put the Hartselle offense right back on the field. Alrdidge limping slightly but not enough to keep him out, especially not in this game. They go three-and-out, capped off by Aldridge getting sacked.

- There are a

ton

of dropped passes in this game. Hartselle and Vigor wide receivers aren't dong much to help out their quarterbacks.

- That's not to mention the mental miscues. Another roughing the kicker penalty gives Vigor a first down near midfield when it looked like Hartselle would get good field position and plenty of time to score before half. …
