Article excerpt

TUSCALOOSA | D.J. White won't be able to watch the action in the basketball tournament that bears his name.

The fifth annual D.J. White Holiday Basketball Tournament starts today and ends Saturday at Shelton State Community College. White went from Hillcrest High School to Indiana University to the NBA. Brookwood coach Thad Fitzpatrick, who coached White at Hillcrest and served as an assistant at Indiana, said White is playing basketball in China, having signed with the Shanghai Sharks, a team owned by former NBA center Yao Ming.

Fitzpatrick's Brookwood Panthers will participate in the tournament along with three other teams based in Tuscaloosa County - - Paul W. Bryant, Central and Holt. The other teams are based in West Alabama -- Greene County, Sumter Central, Hale County and Greensboro.

"Everybody is guaranteed three games in three days," Fitzpatrick said.

"That's what the coaches like. What we really want is for people to be excited about trying to get in it. I think the field turned out to be very good."

In the last Alabama Sports Writers Association poll before the holidays, Greensboro was ranked No. 1 in Class 3A. In Class 5A, Paul W. Bryant was No. 2, Sumter Central No. 3 and Central No. 7.

Greensboro, which has a new coach in Marty Everett, has won two straight AHSAA championships. Returning for the Raiders is senior Jimmie Taylor, a 6-foot-9 center and forward. Taylor signed with the University of Alabama in November.

"You can't miss him, that's for sure," Fitzpatrick said. "He's a factor all in himself."

Paul W. Bryant is coming off a 74-37 victory over Huffman in a tournament at Mountain Brook. All 14 players wound up scoring for the Stampede, which ran its record to 14-2. Kevin Holland had 19 points, and Dexter Hood scored 13. James Currington had seven points, 18 rebounds and 12 blocked shots. Earlier on Saturday, Paul W. Bryant defeated Decatur 47-40. Holland had 15 points. Hood and Currington scored 11 points each. Currington also had 15 rebounds.

Sumter Central's JyKwentin Johnson, a 6-4 senior, scored 22 points in a recent loss at Hillcrest.

In today's games, Greene County faces Hale County at 3, followed by Paul W. Bryant vs. Brookwood at 4:30, Central vs. Greensboro at 6 and Holt vs. Sumter Central at 7:30. …
