Gordo Pitcher Haleigh Junkin Signs with Stillman

GORDO | Senior Haleigh Junkin has helped the Gordo High School softball team earn berths in two AHSAA regionals, and she hopes to do so again in the spring.

But Junkin reached another milestone in her career last week. The left-handed pitcher signed a scholarship offer to play for Stillman College in Tuscaloosa.

"I'm just excited that I can play softball after high school, that it doesn't end after high school," Junkin said. "So far, it was my No. 1 day.

"In my 11th-grade year, my pitching coach (Gary Thomas) told me that he thought I could do it. And then everybody started telling me how good they thought I was. This helps me focus on the team and not myself. I don't have to worry so much about me, I guess."

Junkin will make the transition to college with a close friend. Leah Pennington, a catcher at Sipsey Valley, also signed last week to play for Stillman. …
