LEND A HAND: Grocery Store Fundraiser Will Benefit Local Schoolchildren

Local grocery shoppers can help get school supplies to needy students during the next few weeks.

Publix Super Markets is conducting its annual Tools for Back to School campaign at all its stores through Aug. 13.

All money collected at the four Publix stores in Tuscaloosa and Northport will be used to buy school supplies in bulk that will be given to the United Way of West Alabama for distribution to needy students in the local area, said Brenda Reid, Publix media and community relations manager.

During the Back to School fundraiser, Publix customers can tear off tickets at marked $5, $7 or $10 at a store display and then give the ticket to the cashier who will add the amount to their purchase.

Reid said she did not have past figures for individual stores or communities, "but we know our customers are very generous." She said the yearly amounts raised in the Tuscaloosa market are in the thousands of dollars and all the money raised stays in the local community. …
