Deontay Wilder's Right Hand Likely Broken, X-Rays Reveal

World heavyweight boxing champion Deontay Wilder had X-rays taken after returning from winning the WBC title that appear to show a fracture in his right hand.

Wilder, the Tuscaloosa native who defeated Bermane Stiverne by 12- round unanimous decision in Las Vegas last Saturday night to win the championship, underwent X-rays on Sunday in Tuscaloosa that appeared to reveal a fracture in the knuckle area of his ring finger. His hand was visibly swollen by the time he showed up at the airport for his return flight the morning after the fight.

"I think I hurt my hand around the fourth, fifth round but nobody could tell. They still couldn't tell," Wilder said Saturday night after the bout. "That's what a true champion is all about. Going through the hurt and pain and still getting through the fight."

Wilder is expected to be examined by Birmingham hand surgeon Dr. Joseph Sherrill in the next couple of days. Sherrill did surgery on Wilder's right hand in 2009 and has performed surgeries on other prominent athletes, including former boxing champion Roy Jones Jr. …
