MONTGOMERY | Akron High School's Cinderella story continued with a 62-43 victory over Notasulga in a Class 1A regional semifinal on Friday afternoon.

After winning just one game in the regular season, the Rams (4- 24) will play in the Elite Eight for the first time since 2002 against rival Sunshine (23-4) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Both districts will be closing their doors permanently at the end of the school year.

"It started out rough," Rams coach Barry Ward said. "For these guys to stick through it, through all the circumstances of everyone saying you aren't going to do anything or be this -- to put it all together with the school about to close -- I feel like there is a lot on their shoulders. Now they are just letting it all go."

Akron defeated Autaugaville 54-53 in the sub-regional to make its first Sweet 16 appearance in 12 years, and didn't show any signs of slowing down against the Blue Devils. …
