Alabama's Jeff Garrett Plans to Transfer; Lawson Schaeffer Invited as Walk-On

The University of Alabama men's basketball program has granted a release to freshman forward Jeff Garrett and he plans to transfer.

Garrett did not play last season after undergoing preseason foot surgery. He is the third player to announce a decision to transfer since UA fired Anthony Grant and replaced him with Avery Johnson in early April. Devin Mitchell (Georgia State) and Ricky Tarrant (Memphis) have also transferred.

Garrett would have to sit out another season if he transfers to a Division I program.

Also on Thursday, Crimson Tide added one of the state's most accomplished high school players as Lawson Schaeffer of Cullman High School announced on Thursday that he would accept a spot as an invited walk-on for the Crimson Tide, selecting UA over similar walk- on opportunities at Auburn and UAB.

Schaeffer, a 5-foot-11 guard, averaged 21 points and seven assists per game in leading Cullman to a 29-6 record last season and was chosen as the AHSAA Class 6A Player of the Year. …
