Gordo, Winfield Try to Move One Step Closer to State Title

West Alabama will be well represented in the Class 3A baseball state semifinals today.

Gordo (29-3) travels to Geneva (23-8) and Winfield (29-13) travels to Madison Academy (25-12). Both games are scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

The Greenwave advanced to the semifinals with a come-from-behind 11-7 victory over American Christian Academy last week.

"Anytime you overcome adversity it makes you better," Gordo coach Jonathan Pate said. "These are a special group of kids with a very competitive attitude."

Gordo last won a 3A state championship in 2011. Making it to the state semifinals is something Pate said is a goal every year.

"It's a great experience for the kids and the community," Pate said. "Geneva is a very good team with exceptional pitching."

Geneva defeated Bayside Academy to advance in a deciding game, 4- 1.

This marks the first trip to the semifinals for Winfield since 2009. The Pirates have advanced to the third round of the playoffs the past three years, and this season they finally made it back.

"The kids have worked hard to have an opportunity to continue on and have a chance to play for a state championship," Pirates coach Alan Smith said. …
