Indians Validate Place in Sun State Playoffs Beckon to Peters Township

One year later, the Peters Township baseball team finds itself in familiar territory.

After losing to North Allegheny, 12-9, in the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals last Monday, Peters Township is eagerly awaiting the start of the PIAA tournament. It is scheduled to begin next Monday.

It was in this very PIAA tournament in 2003 that the Indians came of age.

They rolled through the bracket and advanced to the semifinals before losing to rival Bethel Park.

This season, Peters Township was ranked No. 1 in the state early on.

After a difficult regular season and Section 6 race, the Indians advanced to the WPIAL semifinals, only to lose to the Tigers for a second straight season.

Now, Peters Township is in the same position it was a season ago. The Indians meet Pine-Richland at 7 p.m. Monday at Falconi Field.

But after a bumpy ride in the latter part of the regular season and that loss to North Allegheny, are the Indians in the same mental position as they were in 2003?

"Last year, being that we were new to it, getting to the [WPIAL] semifinals and playing a program like North Allegheny, it was an intimidating type of thing," Peters Township coach Joe Maize said.

"We didn't have the same approach this year. The kids believed in themselves, especially after the first two playoff games, where we saw what needed to be done."

The Indians enter the state playoffs with a 15-7 record. They tied Bethel Park for second place in their section, behind Upper St. Clair.

While four of their losses have come in their past six games, Maize remains confident and upbeat about this group of Peters Township baseball players.

"I was asked by a reporter after the loss to NA if the season were disappointing," Maize said. "I had to chuckle.

"I said, 'No, I think we've had a great season.'
