The documentary "The New Black" will be shown at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland, at 5:30 p.m. The documentary tells the story of how the African-American community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the gay marriage movement and fight over civil rights. The film documents activists, families and clergy on both sides of the campaign to legalize gay marriage, and it examines homophobia in the black church. Doors open at 5 p.m., the film screens at 5:30 p.m. and a panel discussion follows with Rev. Shanea D. Leonard, founder of JUDAH Fellowship Church; La'Tasha D. Mayes, founder and executive director of New Voices Pittsburgh: Women of Color for Reproductive Justice; and Deryck Tines, pastor of ONEchurch, a religious artist and a Gospel musician based in Pittsburgh. The screening, in the Earth Theater on the first floor, is free, but registration is required at www.eventbrite.com. Museum admission isn't included.
