Three WPIAL players and five college players with local ties were selected Saturday in the 2014 MLB Draft.

Norwin infielder J.J. Matijevic was taken in the 22nd round by the Boston Red Sox. Keystone Oaks pitcher Taylor Lehman and Blackhawk pitcher Brendan McKay were taken in the 34th round. Lehman was picked by the Miami Marlins and McKay by the San Diego Padres.

Pitt had three pitchers drafted: Luke Curtis (picked in the 18th round by the Milwaukee Brewers), Joseph Harvey (19th, New York Yankees) and Matt Wotherspoon (34th, Yankees). Slippery Rock shortstop Will Kengor, a Central Catholic graduate, was taken by the Detroit Tigers in the 28th round.

The Pirates took Kent State pitcher Eric Dorsch, a 2010 graduate of North Allegheny, in the 15th round.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was selected by San Diego in the 28th round of the MLB Draft -- the 837th player taken. Manziel was listed as a shortstop for Texas A&M, although he never played for the Aggies as he focused on football. Manziel played baseball and football at Tivy High School in Kerrville, Texas, and asked Texas A&M coaches about being part of the baseball team before winning the Aggies' starting quarterback job. …
