RIDE-SHARING FIRMS FINED

Ride-sharing in Pittsburgh took a serious blow due to hefty fines issued by the state Public Utility Commission. Drivers for Lyft and Uber also face $1,000 fines and possible suspension of their vehicle's registration. The PUC argues that the ride-sharing companies, which have private citizens perform taxi services in their private vehicles, are in violation of state laws that prohibit taking compensation for transportation without a state- issued certificate of public convenience.

MAGEE OR HILLMAN?

Cancer patients seeking treatment at UPMC's acclaimed Hillman Cancer Center will find the same treatments in the same building under a new name. UPMC transferred Hillman and its Passavant cancer program under the stewardship of Oakland's Magee-Womens Hospital in an accounting move designed to save millions of dollars. The move was made because Magee clinics are able to purchase medications at a discounted rate through a federal program designed to help clinics serving low-income populations. …
