Adams Man Followed His Passion into Geriatrics Field

Jim Pieffer has always wanted to work in geriatrics even when he didn't know what the word meant. While other students were weighing other career fields, he felt the most comfortable around senior citizens and knew that was where he wanted to find a career.

"I grew up in a big Polish family and my grandmother lived with us. My dad's mom was only a few blocks away, so I was used to being around that generation," he said.

Mr. Pieffer followed that early goal and has worked in geriatrics his entire career. Mr. Pieffer is the senior vice president of Presbyterian SeniorCare and recently received the LeadingAge PA Leader of the Year Award.

"It was an incredible surprise. I didn't even know I was nominated. I'm usually a behind the scenes kind of guy, so this was new for me to be in the frontt," Mr. Pieffer said.

LeadingAge PA is an association of over 360 non-profit providers of senior healthcare, housing and community services in the state.

Each year, they honor outstanding members of this community, including Mr. Pieffer this year.

"Jim is an extraordinary leader committed to improving the lives of seniors in terms of quality care and services. I can't imagine anyone who exemplifies the qualities of our Leader of the Year Award more," Ron Barth, president and CEO of LeadingAge said.

Mr. Pieffer went to college at Saint Vincent where he majored in sociology and public administration.

Mr. Pieffer worked at Divine Providence Hospital while he was in college. When he began looking at graduate school, he learned of the University of Pittsburgh's program in health administration.

"This was exactly what I was looking for," he said.

Mr. Pieffer started his studies and when the time came for his internship, someone suggested Presbyterian SeniorCare.

"I called and they offered me the internship right over the phone," he said. It was the start of a long relationship. Mr. …
