Millvale Teens to Get a Space of Their Own Library Uses Two Grants to Convert Building Next Door into Youth Center, Add Programs

Millvale teens will have their own space to get together and "hang out" when renovations are finished on a building next to Millvale Community Library on Grant Avenue.

Part of a $69,000 grant from the Grable Foundation will be used to complete construction of the building, which is owned by the library, and outfit the teen center in a first-floor back room. Shaler Area High School's Youth Advocacy League will have an office there as well.

"Kids who have graduated are still involved in the youth advocacy league and this will provide a place for them to connect with the library and kids still in high school," Brian Wolovich, president of the library board, said.

The work on the building is expected to be completed by next spring, he said.

Another $38,000 of the Grable grant will go toward a Kidsburgh project.

The borough was chosen to be the first neighborhood partnering with Kidsburgh, a collaborative effort to make Pittsburgh communities better places for kids to live, learn and play.

In addition to the teen center, other Kidsburgh goals on which the library will focus as a result of the grant include providing six early childhood and family programs every month to educate parents; holding a kindergarten roundup in the spring in partnership with Shaler Area School District to ensure that children are registered; creating a quarterly newsletter to communicate with Millvale families; and organizing quarterly meetings on youth and family issues, including an annual Millvale Youth Summit. …
