MANY PITCHED IN TO HELP AFTER A DOG WAS ATTACKED

I was walking my little dog Benny along the Montour Trail in Bethel Park on Aug. 1 when we came upon a woman walking her dog.

She said he was a 2-year-old bull mastiff that she got as a rescue. Because both dogs seemed eager to meet one another, we let them. Both of them were nose sniffing with their tails wagging, and all seemed fine.

Suddenly, the mastiff lunged and grabbed Benny in his jaws. I became hysterical and tried to pull his jaws apart. He finally let go, leaving Benny a bloody mess.

At that point, a young woman named Jen came running along and offered to help. She gave me her jacket to wrap around Benny and we ran to her car, which was parked at the Irishtown exit.

A man named Ken and his wife, Madge, and her friend Susan also followed and offered to help. The two women went back down the trail to see if they could find the dog owner and her mastiff, but they had disappeared.

Jen drove me to the Castle Shannon Animal Hospital, and Ken and his wife followed. The staff did what they could there before referring us to Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center in the North Hills. Jen stayed with us as long as she could and only left when she knew that Ken would drive Benny and me to the North Hills.

I was finally able to reach my daughter-in-law, who arrived shortly and took care of everything after that. Ken stayed until he was sure she was on her way.

Benny lost his eye and had to have his jaw wired. He also had several puncture wounds. The vet said that in time he should be OK (I hope).

Many, many thanks to all the people who helped me. There were several others whose names I couldn't get.
