Making a Splash 12-Year-Old Mt. Lebanon Girl Dives in to Raise Funds to Fight Breast Cancer

When her daughter came up with an idea for a fundraiser at Mt. Lebanon Swim Center, Mindy Dorish thought, no sweat. "I thought it would be 25 or 30 swimmers," she said. "We can handle that, just like a little pool party."

By the time Breast Stroke 4 Breast Cancer took place Sunday morning at the swim center, that figure had jumped to about 100 swimmers ready to help the cause.

Maddie Dorish, 12, who is starting seventh grade at Jefferson Middle School, thought of the swim-oriented benefit for her bat mitzvah project and selected a cause in honor of a family member who has breast cancer.

"I wanted to help people like her," Maddie said. Plus, she said, her best event when competing for the Mt. Lebanon Aqua Club happens to be the breaststroke.

By word of mouth, announcements at swim meets and plenty of support from family and friends, the Dorishes attracted swimmers of all ages from as far away as Wheeling, W.Va., to participate in the event, which included a breaststroke clinic by coaches who donated their time and expertise.

"They were wonderful," said Ms. Dorish. "The coaches actually got into the water. For the younger swimmers, that's the best thing. They knew what to do."

One of the instructors was Kaitlyn Orstein, who won four state championships in the 100-yard breaststroke and was a Mt. Lebanon High School swimmer and a 2004 Olympic trial qualifier.

The event also featured a timed breast stroke competition, in which swimmers earned raffle tickets for as many laps as they could complete in four minutes. …
