Offensive Dominance Trickles Down to Crest

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia fans caught a glimpse of the future Saturday night when freshman quarterback William Crest trotted onto the field to relieve starter Clint Trickett late in the third quarter of the Mountaineers' 54-0 rout of Division I-AA Towson.

Trickett had little more to prove when he tagged out. He shredded the Tigers, completing 35 of 40 passes for 348 yards and two touchdowns, and gifted Crest a 40-point cushion for his West Virginia debut.

"What I'm thinking about is the five incompletions," Trickett said afterward. "Especially the one to Cody [Clay]," a third touchdown pass that was overturned after video review.

Crest, West Virginia's prized recruit in the 2014 class, will likely remember his collegiate career for the way it ends and not how it began. Crest was sacked on his fourth snap and fumbled, the Mountaineers' first turnover of the season.

"He got a little flustered there," Trickett said of Crest. "I told him that's going to be part of it. You've just got to put two hands on the ball."

Coach Dana Holgorsen said Crest stayed calm despite the early blunder.

"If there's ever going to be a turnover you can get positives out of, I think that's probably going to be one of them," Holgorsen said. "The game was in hand."

Crest bounced back quickly to lead the Mountaineers on two fourth- quarter scoring drives, including a 4-yard scamper for the first touchdown of his West Virginia career. The dual-threat quarterback completed 3 of 4 passes for 7 yards and rushed five times for 27 yards.

"Will stepped up and really showed everybody that he's going to be a great quarterback in the future," running back Rushel Shell said. "Will's got a running back body frame, but he's got an arm like an ... I don't know, it's hard to explain -- that boy can throw that thing.
