Shady Side Regroups in a Hurry Feisty Indians Seek to Retain Wpial Title

Having to replace all-section performers at forward, in the midfield and in net, there was going to be plenty of questions to be answered in the first week of the season even for defending WPIAL champion Shady Side Academy.

Opening the season at Class AAA Fox Chapel and at defending PIAA Class A champion Greensburg Central Catholic, wins were going to be hard to find but the team was ready to find out plenty about itself.

The Indians (5-2, 5-1 through Tuesday), the Post-Gazette preseason No. 1 team in Class A, lost both contests, but all was not lost.

"We opened up against Fox Chapel, which we knew would be a tough game," Shady Side Academy coach Mary Lynch said. "And I think it is good to play Greensburg Central early on. They graduated two great players from last season's team and we knew that they would still be one of our strongest competitors in the section. It was a good learning experience to see what we need to work on."

Shady Side Academy has plenty to work with. The Indians had to replace Maggie Scott, a 50-goal scorer from last season, and now they will have to learn to build from the back. They have two experienced defenders to do just that.

Senior Kara Pooley and sophomore Eliza Cochran were both named all-section defenders last season. They will be called upon to do even more.

"In terms of losing Maggie, we are now trying to learn how to build the attack from the back," Lynch said. "Maggie was such a strong offensive player, so we are really working on replacing her and replacing Zoe Schoen in the midfield. She was very strong and she controlled the field."

Junior defender Olivia Cotter is another returning starter in the back for Shady Side Academy. The only newcomer on defense is junior Sache Coury, who earned a starting spot this season.

"It is great to have three returning defenders," Lynch said. …
