Before the Duquesne men's basketball team took the court for its first fall practice Monday afternoon, the coaching staff wrapped up its 2015 recruiting class.

The Dukes landed a verbal pledge Monday from Tottenville High School forward Nakye Sanders, their priority recruit, to take the only scholarship spot available. Sanders expects to sign his national letter of intent in the early signing period in November.

Sanders, a 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward averaged 19 points and 21 rebounds per game last season, according to Tottenville coach John Woodman, and was named a New York State Class AA first-team selection.

"He's got 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in his high-school career already, and he's got a full year ahead of him," Woodman said.

Sanders, 16, has room to mature physically.

"He is definitely still growing," Woodman said. "He could just get huge and nasty. ... By the time he shows up at Duquesne, he could be 6-10, 240."

Sanders visited the Bluff last weekend, his only official college visit despite holding more than 20 scholarship offers and taking unofficial visits to VCU, Rhode Island, Drexel and Seton Hall, among a few other potential suitors. …
