Coach Gives an Attitude Adjustment

Article excerpt

Culture is often a vague, ambiguous term when used to describe the dynamics surrounding a football program.

Whatever it does mean, Glenn McDougal recognized it immediately when he returned to South Side Beaver for the 2012 season.

And he knew right then that he needed to change it.

What was once a competitive program had gone through a series of lean years. It went 1-9 and 0-9 in consecutive seasons (in 2010 and '11), with few -- if any -- signs signaling an imminent turnaround.

"Their attitudes, it was like the world was after them instead of doing everything they needed to do in order to win," McDougal said. "They wanted to do all of the easy things instead of putting in all the work necessary."

Two years later, the situation is drastically different.

The Rams are 4-2 after going winless last season and are on the verge of clinching their first WPIAL playoff berth since 2009.

The first six games of 2014 have represented a high point in McDougal's second stint with the team.

It was during his first one, from 1990-2000, that he posted a 57- 36-2 record, a successful run that included WPIAL and PIAA Class A titles in 1999 with an undefeated team.

Though he stepped away from coaching, McDougal was still a part of the community. He taught physical education at the school and saw his children graduate from there.

In some ways, he never left, making the decision to come back that much easier.

This year's team has been buoyed by a breakout season from senior Nathan Block, who rushed for 1,057 yards in the team's first six games, far surpassing his 2013 rushing total of 666 yards (which came as the team's quarterback).

"That's the big difference, that the line has allowed him to get some space to do his thing," McDougal said.

With two conference games remaining, the Rams are a win away from earning one of the Big Seven's four playoff spots. …
