Megna Called Up to Provide Depth at Forward

The Penguins called up forward Jayson Megna from Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Thursday to add depth for the next few games.

Penguins coach Mike Johnston said he had a great camp and offers some speed and a physical element.

It's unclear, however, if Megna will see any playing time because there were no injured forwards heading into a game Thursday night against the Los Angeles Kings, and Megna was scratched.

"[Megna] had a good camp and down there so far in [Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton] the reports are very good," Johnston said. "He carries some speed, he can play with some skill. He's got a little bit of physical play. He's not a big guy, he does finish his checks.

"To bring him up now gives us some depth just over these next few days to make sure we have some depth up front because [otherwise] we won't have an extra forward."

Megna played 36 games for the Penguins in 2013-14, when he had five goals and four assists.

In nine games in the American Hockey League this season, he had two goals and one assist.

Day off helps Martin

A day off seemed to serve Paul Martin well. Martin rejoined the team at morning skate after a "maintenance day" and some back stiffness.

"They looked at him close on the day off and to see how he reacted," Johnston said. "When we got on the ice [Thursday morning], I just went by just to see how he's feeling, and he feels great.

"So, sometimes during the year with players that play that volume of games over the course of their career, you do have to have a maintenance day. …
