Dragons Seek Senior Moment Game of the Week: Allderdice (8-1) vs. Brashear (5-3)

For the 18 seniors on Allderdice's football team, reaching the City League championship game has been a testament to the work they've put forth in their high school careers.

Saturday, they'll be appearing in the title game for the third time in four years with a Dragons program that finished 1-8 two seasons before they arrived. By most any measurement, it's been a remarkable run.

But for all that the City League championship represents as far as the seniors' accomplishments, it's where their dreams have ultimately gone to die. They have lost in their previous two appearances, including a 13-point loss to University Prep last season. The Dragons have not won a league title since 1967.

It's a trend that's made the Dragons hungrier for an even greater level of success in 2014. Against Brashear, they're hoping that will drive them over the elusive final hurdle.

"We're not 8-1 for nothing," Allderdice coach Jerry Haslett said. "These kids are buying into each other. They're sticking together as teammates."

The game is the unexpected rematch of a 36-0 Allderdice victory on Sept. 18, a loss that dropped the Bulls to 1-3 and gave little impression that they'd make it to their current standing. Since then, they have won four consecutive games, the most recent of which was a surprising 27-8 handling of University Prep in the semifinals last week. …
