District Borrows $10 Million for Building Upgrades

The Seneca Valley School District is getting its financing in place for the multi-year plan to upgrade all district buildings.

The school board Monday approved a proposal to borrow $10 million through the sale of bonds.The bond sale will be finalized Dec. 4, said Alisha Phillips, managing director at Janney Capital Markets, the district's bond underwriter.

Plans for the district upgrades have been presented to board members over the past few months. One of the goals is to make the district compliant with Title IX athletic requirements, which mandates gender equity in education, among other things.

A portion of the money approved Monday by board members will be used to install athletic turf on the secondary campus on baseball, soccer and softball fields. Athletic director Heather Lewis has said installing artificial turf will allow for better drainage and likely add four more months of use to those fields in the season.

The money also will be used to upgrade heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and repair asphalt and concrete sidewalks districtwide. …
