Article excerpt

It was a reversal of fortunes for the Greensburg Central Catholic girls volleyball team in Saturday's WPIAL Class A title match against Bishop Canevin at Baldwin High School.

The Centurions faced Bishop Canevin in last year's title match and let a 2-1 lead slip away, as the Crusaders rallied to win the final two sets.

The scenario was the same in Saturday's match, but the roles were reversed. Bishop Canevin held a 2-1 lead after thee sets and needed only one win to clinch its second title in a row.

But this time Greensburg Central claimed the final two sets to earn its second WPIAL title in three years.

"This title means so much more than the first one because it's my senior year," said outside hitter Megan Stunja, a four-year starter. "Last year's loss was the hardest thing I've ever been through. We didn't want it to happen again."

Leah Bisignani, a senior setter/middle hitter, felt the same way.

"It feels so amazing," said Bisignani, also a four-year starter. "Ever since we lost last year it's been our goal to come back and win the title, and we finally did. I'm so proud of everyone. This title means more to me than the first. How many girls can say that they played in the WPIAL finals three times and won two titles?"

Bisignani and Stunja played a big part in leading Greensburg Central to its second title in three years. Bisignani recorded a game-high 29 kills, while Stunja was second with 19 kills. Outside hitter Lauren Nolfi, another four-year starter, added 12 kills.

"We have seven seniors on the team," Stunja said. "Everyone makes a contribution whether you're on the floor or on the bench. The players on the bench really helped pick up the starters when we were down. Everyone plays a role."

Passing and hitting errors plagued Greensburg Central in the first and third sets. Bishop Canevin built a six-point lead midway through the first set and settled for a 25-22 victory. …
