Pitt's Vacancies the New Coach and Ad Must Uphold Education

University presidents leave their mark on virtually every matter on their campuses, but few of them attract as much attention as sports.

That's why the announcement Wednesday by Patrick Gallagher, the new chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh, that athletic director Steve Pederson was out created such a stir. The news came the evening that Pitt's football coach, Paul Chryst, accepted the same job at the University of Wisconsin, his alma mater.

The departure of Mr. Chryst, whose teams combined for a 19-19 record in three years, will be no great loss for fans devoted to Panther football. What may be worse is he was one of four head football coaches to direct the Pitt program in four years. Blame Mr. Pederson for that.

So Mr. Gallagher, by seeking a new athletic director at the same time that the revolving door turns again at the coach's office, now has the opportunity to put his stamp on the future of Pitt athletics.

Over the years the Post-Gazette, like many Pittsburghers, has applauded the Panthers' winning ways, regardless of the sport and whether the athletes were men or women. …
