One Killed in Baldwin Towers Fire

An elderly resident died in a three-alarm fire Saturday morning in Baldwin Towers, a senior living facility in Baldwin Borough.

Allegheny County Fire Marshal Alvin Henderson said the fire was confined to one apartment on the top floor of the nine-story building at 200 Knoedler Road. The victim's identity was not released, pending notification to relatives.

Several other residents were treated by paramedics at the scene, said Chief Jim Barbour of Baldwin Borough's Option Fire Department. He did not know the reasons.

Mr. Henderson said the fire appeared to be accidental in nature. It is still under investigation.

"Potentially one of the things we're looking is a potential smoking-related, accidental-type fire," he said.

Between 40 to 50 residents of the 100-unit complex were evacuated from the seventh through ninth floors to the building's community room. Residents on the sixth floor also had the option of leaving.

Many of the residents were able to evacuate under their own power. …
