Michael Kemerer

Last week: Kemerer won his third Powerade Christmas Tournament crown Dec. 30, competing in the 145-pound weight class. He also won a championship at the Walsh Jesuit Ironman Tournament Dec. 13. Those are two of the top three high school tournaments in the country in the regular season. He took a 15-0 record into his match Wednesday against McKeesport.

Check this out: Kemerer is a four-year starter, three-time Class AAA Section 1 champion, three-time WPIAL Class AAA finalist and one- time champion, and a three-time PIAA runner-up. He has a 135-10 career record and has signed a letter of intent to wrestle at the University of Iowa.

* Why did you pick with Iowa? I picked Iowa because of the good relationship I had with the coaches and team when went for my visit. I was also attracted by the enthusiasm they have for wrestling.

* What is your biggest accomplishment as a wrestler? When I made it to the Super 32 tournament finals for the fourth time. I've won two titles at Super 32, including this year. (The Super 32 is before the high school season.)

* When did you start wrestling, and who introduced you to the sport? I started when I was 5 years old. My dad wrestled at Hempfield High School. I tried it because he wanted me to, and I'm glad he did.

* Do you wrestle for a club team? I wrestle for the Young Guns Wrestling Club. It's great having a club so close to me. The club allows me to work out with wrestlers I don't normally see.

* What's the farthest you have ever traveled for a wrestling competition? I've taken the 22-hour bus trip to Fargo, N.D., for the Pennsylvania Freestyle Team. It's a long ride. I try to sleep as much as I can.

* What do you typically do to get ready for a match and/or tournament? I always wear my Iowa socks. Even when I was younger. People give me a hard time about it, but it's something I do for every match.
