Moon School District Gets Support, Criticism for Not Delaying School

Moon Area School District was the only school district in Allegheny County to operate on time today, prompting many parents to weigh in with both criticism and support.

Most schools in the Pittsburgh region issued two-hour delays this morning due to the severe cold. Other districts, such as Highlands and Northgate, closed altogether.

A wind chill advisory was in effect until 1 p.m. today. The high temperature is expected to reach 14 degrees.

Moon Area spokeswoman Tina Vojtko said there would have been no benefit to delaying the school day.

"By delaying two hours, the temperatures would not have improved," Ms. Vojtko said.

Moon Area School District alerted parents and students about its decision to operate on normal hours through its Facebook page, which stated: "The most recent forecast (4:30 a.m.) indicates no meaningful warm up until late morning. One of the major services predicts that temperatures will actually be colder at 8 a.m. …
