HARRISBURG - Gov.-elect Tom Wolf's pick to lead the Pennsylvania state police says he wants to focus on diversity in the force.

In naming Marcus L. Brown, the head of the Maryland state police, his nominee for commissioner of the state police, the governor- elect noted Mr. Brown's efforts to promote diversity in the Maryland force through targeted recruitment.

"A public wants to see an agency that reflects the public that we're serving," Mr. Brown said in an interview. "Although it is a tough issue that all law enforcement struggles with, we're going to make sure that that's a focus in the Pennsylvania state police."

A spokeswoman said the Pennsylvania state police could not provide information Thursday about the racial makeup of its force.

In July, after the Department of Justice alleged that the state police discriminate against women with physical fitness tests, state police Commissioner Frank Noonan said women make up about 5 percent of troopers. …
