Thank you for drawing attention to the good work of A+ Schools in Pittsburgh ("A+ Schools Looking to Strengthen Advocacy Role," Jan. 4).

Evaluating teaching performance draws attention to the things teachers need to do better and focuses everyone's efforts on those things. This is good for children. Being systematic about it keeps us from expecting teachers to do everything. This is good for teachers. A+ Schools has pushed the community to explore what teaching evaluation is and the benefit to children. This is good for entire communities.

A+ takes the long view to empowering communities. Its single- minded focus on the issue of teaching performance keeps all of us focused, inquisitive, critical and engaged in education and children's lives. I have met some extraordinarily devoted Pittsburgh Public Schools teachers and parents whom I would never have met, and whose perspective I never would have heard (kudos to PPS teacher Jonathan Parker), if not for A+ Schools raising awareness and helping Pittsburghers connect over these issues. …
