Pittsburgh power-pop band The Love Letters has assembled a new EP with a little help from a New Pornographer.

The band, led by bassist/singer Mike Shanley (Bone of Contention, Mofones), recorded the four songs locally at Machine Age Studios and got Vancouver-based New Porn bassist John Collins to produce two of them.

"When I interviewed him several years ago for City Paper," says Mr. Shanley, who is also a freelance writer, "we were talking about the University of Phoenix commercial that used their song 'The Bleeding Heart Show.' He said he emailed a remixed version of it to the company doing it, and it was on the air within 24 hours. And it got me thinking, 'If he can do that, I wonder if he'd produce songs that he gets via email.'

"So I tracked him down and we talked, and he said that he actually has done that for a few bands. We sent him the raw tracks and let him do his thing."
