On behalf of the Wrestling with Racism Team of the First United Methodist Church of Pittsburgh, Anne Ashley United Methodist Church in Munhall and Warren United Methodist Church in the Hill District, we want to express our support for recent statements by Pittsburgh police Chief Cameron McLay and Mayor Bill Peduto.

We were encouraged by Chief McLay posing with a poster reading: "I Resolve to Challenge Racism @ Work #End White Silence." We applaud and support his recognition that keeping silent about racial injustice, poverty, etc., is to accept the status quo and is to collude with written and unwritten regulations and practices that continue to negatively impact people of all colors. We heartily support and encourage his willingness to participate in conversations about racism as a way to begin to heal past hurts and to bring the community together.

We also respect Mr. Peduto for his support of Chief McLay's actions and his acknowledgement that "we all have a role in ending racism in Pittsburgh. …
