Kentucky coach John Calipari, who also had successful coaching stints at Massachusetts and Memphis, was among 12 finalists announced Saturday for election into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Calipari guided Kentucky to the NCAA championship in 2012. His teams have reached the Final Four five times.

"I'm at a loss for words," said Calipari, a Moon native. "I want to thank the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame committee for even considering me.

"The process is by no means over -- I'm just a finalist at this point -- but to even be mentioned as a finalist among these worthy candidates is an unbelievable honor."

Former Golden State Warriors point guard Tim Hardaway was also among those on the list.

Hardaway became a finalist for the third consecutive year. He averaged 19.8 points in five-plus seasons for the Warriors before being traded to Miami.

The other player finalists this year were Phoenix Suns standout Kevin Johnson, Lisa Leslie, Dikembe Mutombo, Spencer Haywood and Jo Jo White. …
