Fgi Chapter Pushes Forward

Article excerpt

The first paid-admission event by the Fashion Group International provisional chapter of Pittsburgh was held last week at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. It was the first in a series of events the fledgling group must successfully hold this year in its path to becoming a permanent chapter of the global nonprofit that supports and promotes fashion.

The business of fashion panel discussion featured Ryan Miller of Dick's Sporting Goods and Deanna Tomaselli of rue21, who talked about the challenges and opportunities for major retailers headquartered in Pittsburgh. They also shared insights into projects within their respective companies, such as Dick's athleisure clothing line CALIA with Carrie Underwood and rue21's new Cranberry Mall location, complete with a lounge area for teens to relax, charge their phones or get creative at a selfie station.

The event had a turnout of about 30 people. The group is continuing to accept applications for membership. Growing membership, coupled with the completion of several events this year, will help demonstrate to FGI's headquarters in New York City that Pittsburgh's fashion community can sustain a chapter.

The next event will be held in April. Information: or
