The year was 1965 and I was a bride of about a year. I did not come into my marriage as a good cook.

I grew up in a home where my mother was a great cook and she cooked a full meal every day. The only problem was she was up cooking at 5 a.m. while I was still asleep. This schedule was necessary because she had a full-time job as a teacher. She also had an invalid mother that she checked on every morning before going to work. So even though she was cooking, I almost never got a chance to watch her or get in any practice. By the time my siblings and I got home from school and Dad got home from work, dinner was on the table (usually no later than 5 p.m.).

So, when I got married in 1964 I had almost no experience in cooking. I, too, was a full-time teacher, so most meals needed to be quick and cooked after work. …
