OFFICER GENTLY ASSISTED ONE FAMILY IN DISTRESS

My 6-year-old grandson had surgery at Children's Hospital the morning of March 17. He had his tonsils and adenoids removed.

The tonsils were removed with no problems, but the adenoids were a different story. The surgeon said that it was more difficult than some. He added that my grandson would have more than the usual amount of pain following.

By late afternoon or early evening that day he was stable enough that they released him from the hospital. But when my daughter and her husband were driving him home through the South Side on East Carson Street, my grandson became ill.

My daughter, who was upset, pulled the car over and stopped in an unauthorized parking zone. My son-in-law took my grandson out of the car and took him to the nearest restroom, which was in a Subway sandwich shop.

As my daughter waited in the car, a Pittsburgh police officer approached and asked why she was parked illegally. When she explained the situation, he told her to stay there. He went in to check on the status of my grandson and offered my son-in-law any help that he could. Once my grandson was well enough, the family got back in the car and drove home.

I don't know who that officer was, but we thank him very much for his patience and effort. They were well appreciated.

I was not successful. I became visibly upset because of how helpless I felt at that moment, and just then a man approached my vehicle and offered to push me out of my spot. …
