After a long absence, artist Katie Murken returns to Pittsburgh Center for the Arts with a solo show. She fondly remembers taking art classes there when she was 16 years old.

Her mixed-media exhibit, "Fight Well Against the Future," is featured along with the work of eight other solo artists at the Shadyside location. It's on view through May 3.

She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from Penn State University, and she says while there she was exposed to a wide range of media including photography, sculpture and book arts. She went on to earn her Master of Fine Arts degree in book arts/printmaking at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

Ms. Murkin, who grew up in Peters, also credits international travel as an influence on her artistic practice. In "Fight Well Against the Future," she channels memories of several ancient ruins she visited in Mexico. She uses different dimensions, collages and sculptures to craft a story and imagery. …
