The H.J. Heinz Co. expects to be part of a merger forming the fifth-largest food company on the planet -- and a public company at that -- but for now it sits atop the list of largest private companies in the Pittsburgh region, based on revenue.

The Pittsburgh ketchup company's 2014 revenue of $10.9 billion was down slightly from $11.5 billion in 2013. The iconic local brand was ahead of the second-place finisher, O'Hara supermarket chain Giant Eagle, which reported $9.6 billion in 2014 revenues, down from the previous year's $9.9 billion.

Most of the companies on the list saw modest increases in revenue last year as compared to 2013.

Several area car dealerships reported a bump in 2014, with #1 Cochran, which sells new and used vehicles at 21 dealerships spread throughout Allegheny County, reporting $615 million compared with $536 million in 2013. Day Automotive Group, owner of eight dealerships in Western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, brought in $378 million, up from 2013's $369 million. …
