04.10 Saving energy * The St. Louis Regional High Performance Building Initiative, coordinated by the St. Louis Regional Chamber and U.S. Green Building Council-Missouri Gateway Chapter, challenges St. Louis buildings to reduce energy usage by 25 percent by 2020. This 25 x 20 Energy Benchmarking Campaign will launch at 7:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. Louis Regional Chamber, One Metropolitan Square (211 North Broadway), Suite 1300. Michael Zatz, chief of the Energy Star Commercial and Industrial Branch, U.S. EPA, will be the featured speaker. The 25 x 20 Campaign will encourage the use of Energy Star Portfolio Manager, a free and secure online tool that tracks energy and water consumption, as well as greenhouse gas emissions. 04.10 Historian and journalist to speak * Journalist and author Peter Stark will discuss and sign copies of his book, "Astoria: Astor and Jefferson's Lost Pacific Empire, A Story of Wealth, Ambition, and Survival," at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Louis County Library Headquarters, 1640 South Lindbergh Boulevard. Books will be on sale. "Astoria" is the true-adventure tale of the 1810 Astor Expedition, an epic journey to forge an American empire on the Pacific Coast. Stark offers a harrowing saga in which a band of explorers battled nature, starvation and madness to establish the first American settlement in the Pacific Northwest and open up what would become the Oregon Trail.
