ST. LOUIS > Machete attack victim drives self to hospital * The victim of a machete attack in St. Louis drove himself to a hospital and suffered only minor cuts on his arm, police say.

The victim, 28, got into a quarrel with a man in the 3300 block of Louisiana Avenue about 10 p.m. Wednesday. The suspect grabbed a machete and cut the victim's arm. The suspect drove away in a vehicle, and the victim got into another car and drove himself to the hospital.

Police say the victim wouldn't cooperate with investigators.

BELLEVILLE > Suspect is charged in armed home invasion * A man who stormed into a Belleville home with a knife and robbed two people inside has been charged with home invasion and armed robbery, authorities said.

Bradley C. Scarpi, 33, of Belleville, was charged with the two felonies Thursday and was ordered held in the St. Clair County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail. Police say he entered a home in the 800 block of South Jackson Street about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. He demanded specific items from two residents, police said.

He took property and fled. No one was injured. Scarpi was arrested Wednesday.

ST. LOUIS > Man is fatally shot * Jose Johnson, 19, of the 3400 block of Utah Street, was fatally shot near Fairground Park on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Police called about 2:40 p.m. to an alley in the 3600 block of Harris Avenue found Johnson, who had been shot multiple times. He was standing on Harris near Natural Bridge when a car pulled up, said St. Louis police Lt. John Green. Someone got out, fired nearly 20 shots and chased Johnson into an alley behind an Autozone auto parts shop. The shooter fired more shots at Johnson, who was not armed. He was found dead in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue.

"We know that he was the intended target," Green said. "This was not a random act."

Two suspects were seen in a light gray 2002-2004 Buick , according to police. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-8477.

ST. LOUIS > Tax preparer admits not filing own taxes * A Kirkwood accountant and tax preparer pleaded guilty to a federal charge Thursday and admitted failing to file his own returns and pay taxes on his "substantial" income, prosecutors said.

James T. Mahoney, 54, owed a total of more than $180,000 in tax for tax years 2007-2009, prosecutors said, when he purposely failed to file returns. Mahoney had been preparing tax returns since 1987 and began working for himself, from his home, in 1997, prosecutors said. Mahoney pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of failing to file tax returns and could face up to a year in prison when sentenced July 9.

ST. LOUIS > Police identify victim * A man found dead Wednesday morning at the First Western Inn in St. Louis has been identified as Darnell T. Jones, 41, of the 4100 block of California Avenue.

Jones had an apparent stab wound to the head, authorities said. …
