TOWN AND COUNTRY > Man charged with attacking homeowner * Daniel D. Martin, 20, has been charged with breaking into a home here last week and severely beating the owner.

Martin, of the 3400 block of Elmurst Drive in Bel-Ridge, is charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, first- degree burglary, stealing a motor vehicle and stealing more than $500, police said. Bail was set at $150,000.

Police said Thomas Ruzicka, 60, was attacked on May 8 at the house in the 12900 block of Thornhill Drive. He is recovering at a hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition with a head injury.

Loot taken from him included a 2005 Ford Explorer and two flat- screen TV sets. The vehicle was found abandoned Friday in north St. Louis.

Investigators have not found any link between the victim and the suspect, said Lt. Mike Thompson of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis. "We haven't found any connection at all," he said. Martin "appears to have somehow happened upon that house."

Ruzicka is an electrical contractor who pleaded guilty in 2010 to a federal charge of stealing from a workers' retirement fund, and has been in a recent dispute with the electricians' union over work on the new St. Louis police headquarters. Thompson has said that appears to have played no role in the attack.

MADISON COUNTY > Driver dead in car under tanker * The driver was killed about 10:25 a.m. Thursday in a car that was crushed under a tanker truck filled with milk that rolled over after hitting debris on Route 140 north of Edwardsville, police said.

The victim's name and gender were not released. Trooper Calvin Dye of the Illinois State Police said the tanker's driver lost control after hitting a tailgate that fell off a dump truck onto the two-lane pavement. The milk truck hit two other vehicles, pinning one beneath it in a roadside ditch.

Police said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, between Route 159 and St. James Drive, near the unincorporated community of Holiday Shores.

ST. PETERS > Rape at school reported * Police are investigating a report that a student was raped earlier this week at DuBray Middle School in the Fort Zumwalt School District.

Superintendent Bernard DuBray said the attack was reported to have happened during school hours in the building on Tuesday, and involved two students. He declined to be more specific.

A letter to parents Thursday said the school will be installing surveillance cameras to help supervise hallways.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to contact St. Peters police at 636-278-2244.

ST. LOUIS > Tree-trimmer charged with theft * Dennis Koenig, 35, denied stealing jewelry from a home here where he trimmed trees for years until police confronted him with surveillance photos showing him at gold dealers. Koenig, of O'Fallon, Mo. …
